Energy transition: Vision 2030

The member states of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) have been progressing at different rates in the development and implementation of their energy transition strategies. The multiple contexts and challenges have led to different solutions and approaches to a common struggle: decarbonizing economies more quickly and meeting climate objectives.

This is a challenge on a global scale, with impacts in different areas, that requires joint work at a regional and cross-sectoral level, bringing together the Environment, Climate, Energy and Finance sectors; and integrating the different government entities interlocutors that coordinate them, company leaders, financiers and other stakeholders, who must jointly debate the challenges and find solutions.

The CPLP has acted as a space for sharing experiences and exchanging good practices, to foster cooperation and dialogue in defining a path towards energy transition. It is with this in mind that the Government of São Tomé and Príncipe, which holds the pro tempore Presidency of the CPLP, together with the Energy Thematic Committee of the CPLP Consultative Observers, coordinated by ALER - Lusophone Renewable Energy Association and RELOP - Association of Energy Regulators of Portuguese-speaking Countries, will be organizing a Series of CPLP Energy and Climate Seminars.

These seminars aim to identify the opportunities created by public and private climate finance mechanisms that contribute to accelerating the energy transition, especially in developing economies; and to support governments in developing a favorable framework that brings security to investors and guarantees the public-private complementarity of financial resources in sustainable energy projects.

Four seminars are planned, each one on a different theme: the first seminar will take place on 2nd July 2024, in Lisbon, in the Auditorium of the CPLP headquarters and will focus on private investment; the second will address climate funds and is scheduled for 10th October, in Praia (Cape Verde); a third seminar will follow on 22nd November, in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), about carbon credits; and finally, the last seminar will take place in March 2025, in São Tomé and Príncipe, in which a Lusophone roadmap for COP30 will be defined.

With the institutional support of the CPLP and the Energy Ministries of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal and São Tomé and Príncipe, this series also has the support of the Luxembourg Cooperation and Development Agency (LuxDev), the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and GET.transform, funded by the European Union and German Cooperation.

On the way to COP29, dedicated to the topic of financing, and with our sights set on COP30 (the first Lusophone COP, to be held in Brazil) and the achievement of the decarbonization objectives and SDGs set for 2030, we invite you to join this initiative and, together, debate the challenges and opportunities of climate finance for the energy transition.
