Brazil invites IRENA to host Secretariat for Global Coalition on Energy Planning
Brazil, the outgoing G20 president, has invited the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to serve as the secretariat of the newly established Global Coalition on Energy Planning (GCEP).
This was announced on 11th January during a side event on “Global Coalition for Energy Planning – Shaping the Agenda for Action”, ahead of the 15th IRENA Assembly in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).
The establishment of GCEP, when developing countries need to increase clean energy investments six-fold to meet global climate goals, was first announced at the G20 Energy Transitions Ministerial Meeting in Foz do Iguaçu, Brazil, last October. At the end of the same month, the GCEP was presented at the session “Outlook for COP 29 and Main Conclusions of the G20 Energy Transition Working Groups”, by Leandro Albuquerque, National Secretary for Energy Transition and Planning of the Brazilian Ministry of Mines and Energy, and Djane Melo, Energy Transition Coordinator at ANEEL's Energy Innovation and Transition Secretariat, as part of the 2nd CPLP Energy and Climate Seminar.
As a platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange and capacity building, GCEP focuses on promoting effective, inclusive and transparent energy planning as a tool to accelerate investments in clean energy, especially in developing countries, and ensure a just and equitable transition for all.
