Mozambique consolidates its position as a regional energy hub with record exports

Mozambique reached a new milestone in energy exports in 2023, consolidating its position as one of the main electricity suppliers in the southern African region. The country exported a record 11,585GWh of electricity, an increase of 9% compared to 2022, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE) and the state company Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM).

South Africa remained the biggest buyer of Mozambican energy, purchasing 9,079 GWh, equivalent to 80% of the total exported. Zimbabwe followed with 878 GWh, Botswana with 396 GWh and Zambia with 235 GWh. Small neighboring countries also rely heavily on electricity produced by Mozambique, including Eswatini (132 GWh), Lesotho (97 GWh) and Malawi (4 GWh).

In addition to direct exports, the country supplied 765 GWh to the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), a common electricity network that integrates energy companies from southern Africa. This volume, although lower than the annual average of more than 1,000 GWh recorded since 2019, reinforces Mozambique's role as a central player in regional energy supply.
