UN renews development cooperation program in São Tome and Príncipe
The commemoration of the 78th anniversary of the United Nations (UN) was celebrated in São Tomé and Príncipe on October 24th. Eric Overvest, UN Resident Coordinator in São Tomé, marked the date by reinforcing the UN's support for the country's development in key sectors, namely education, health, economic development and environmental protection.
The UN and São Tome and Príncipe recently signed a new cooperation programme for the years 2023 – 2027, aiming to "build a more inclusive and equitable future for the country".
"We are committed to strengthening key sectors, from education, to health, to economic development, to environmental protection with a focus on innovative financing mechanisms and renewable energy. Together, we have been investing in projects that empower local communities, promote gender equality, and improve quality of life, leaving no one behind," said the UN Coordinator.
However, Eric Overvest admitted "that there is a lot to be done" and that the United Nations works hand in hand with the Government, civil society, the private sector, and academia to boost the country's development accelerators.
"From UN, there is a commitment to support São Tomé and Príncipe in its journey towards progress. We are here to collaborate, to listen and to learn." The joint efforts will make it possible to "create opportunities, promote social inclusion and build a promising future" and also "build a more prosperous, peaceful and sustainable São Tomé and Príncipe for the people of São Tomé," said the UN spokesman.
